Okra (Bhindi) Cultivation Guide: Sowing, Spacing & Picking
How to grow hybrid okra (bhindi) for high yield — season and sowing, seed rate and spacing, irrigation, fertilizer, and the picking schedule that keeps plants producing tender, market-grade pods.

Okra (bhindi) is the most flexible vegetable a farmer can grow — sowable across three seasons, fast to market and in steady local demand. A hybrid such as Purvi gives uniform, tender pods and a long picking window. Here's how to grow it well.
Soil and season
Okra likes warm weather and sandy loam soil rich in organic matter with good drainage. It is frost-sensitive, so avoid the coldest winter weeks.
- Monsoon crop: sow June–July
- Winter crop: sow September–December
- Summer crop: sow January–March
This flexibility lets you keep land productive and hit different market windows through the year.
Sowing, seed rate and spacing
- Seed rate: ~4–6 kg/ha (line sowing), 8–10 kg/ha (broadcast)
- Spacing: ~45–60 cm between rows × 30 cm between plants (closer in summer, wider in the rainy season)
- Depth: 2–3 cm into moist soil
Soaking seed overnight before sowing speeds and evens up germination, which matters most for the summer crop.
Nutrition
Okra responds well to organic matter — incorporate well-rotted farmyard manure during land preparation. Apply a balanced basal dose of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash at sowing (to a soil test), then top-dress nitrogen once early growth is underway and again at the start of flowering to sustain a long picking run.
Water
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially through flowering and pod set — moisture stress here causes flower drop and short, deformed pods. Summer crops need frequent irrigation; monsoon crops mainly need drainage so they don't sit in water.
Picking — the key to yield
This is where okra is won or lost. Pick every 2–3 days, harvesting young, tender pods before they turn fibrous. Frequent picking does two things: it keeps every pod at market grade, and it pushes the plant to keep flowering. Leave pods too long and they go woody and the plant slows down new flowering.
Watch for
- Yellow vein mosaic (a viral disease spread by whitefly) — start with a tolerant hybrid and control whitefly early.
- Fruit and shoot borer — pick regularly, remove and destroy bored pods and wilted shoot tips.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to sow okra (bhindi)?+
Hybrid okra is highly flexible. It can be sown in the monsoon (June–July), winter (Sept–Dec) and summer (Jan–March), making it a near year-round crop where water and frost-free weather allow.
What is the seed rate and spacing for okra?+
Use about 4–6 kg/ha for line sowing and 8–10 kg/ha for broadcasting. Keep roughly 45–60 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants; summer crops are sown a little closer than monsoon crops.
How often should okra be picked?+
Pick every 2–3 days. Okra pods turn fibrous fast, so frequent picking of young, tender pods keeps quality high and signals the plant to keep flowering and producing.
