Castor Cultivation Guide: Sowing, Spacing & Crop Care

Step-by-step hybrid castor (erandi) cultivation — soil and seedbed, sowing time, seed rate and spacing, irrigation, fertilizer and management of wilt and semilooper for a high-yield oilseed crop.

Castor (erandi) is one of the most dependable oilseeds for Gujarat's light soils — deep-rooted, drought-hardy and long-yielding, with spikes that keep filling over months. Hybrid castor rewards a well-drained field, correct plant spacing and steady protection against wilt and semilooper.

Soil and seedbed preparation

Castor prefers deep, well-drained sandy loam to loam. Its deep root system lets it perform on lighter soils, but it will not tolerate waterlogging or salinity. Give 2–3 ploughings and planking for a deep, level, clod-free seedbed, and incorporate well-rotted farmyard manure to improve moisture-holding on lighter land.

Sowing time, seed rate and spacing

  • Season: irrigated — mid-July to mid-August; rainfed — with the monsoon
  • Seed rate: ~4–6 kg/ha of hybrid seed
  • Spacing: about 90 × 60 cm (irrigated); wider 120 × 60 cm on light, rainfed land
  • Target population: ~18,000–20,000 plants/ha
  • Depth: 4–6 cm into moist soil

Correct spacing is critical: castor branches heavily, and crowded plants give thin spikes. Line sowing at the right population lets each plant carry a full primary and secondary spike.

Irrigation

Rainfed castor survives on stored moisture, but a few protective irrigations transform yield. The stages that must not miss water are:

StageWhy it matters
Early growthEstablishes the plant frame and branching
Primary spikeFlowering and capsule set on the main spike
Secondary spikesSustains the crop's long yielding period

Never let water stand around the roots — castor is far more sensitive to waterlogging than to a short dry spell.

Fertilizer

Castor is a long-duration crop and responds well to split nitrogen. Apply phosphorus and potash basally on a soil-test basis, with nitrogen split between sowing, the primary-spike stage and after the first picking so the crop is fed through its long spike-bearing period.

Pest and disease management

  • Fusarium wilt: the main disease — choose wilt-tolerant hybrids and avoid continuous castor on the same land.
  • Castor semilooper and capsule borer: scout regularly from the spike stage and spray a recommended insecticide on threshold.
  • Good drainage and rotation prevent most root and wilt problems.

Harvesting

Castor spikes mature in flushes. Pick spikes as their capsules turn brown and begin to dry, in several pickings over the season, then dry and thresh. Timely picking of each flush keeps the plant investing in the next set of spikes.

Putting it together

Sow on time into a deep, well-drained bed at the correct wide spacing, split the nitrogen, keep water off the roots, and stay ahead of wilt and semilooper. For the full crop picture see the castor pillar guide and the comparison of castor and mustard as rabi oilseeds, and consider Astha hybrid castor for a strong, wilt-tolerant crop.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is castor sown?

In Gujarat, irrigated hybrid castor is mainly sown from mid-July to mid-August, while rainfed castor is sown with the monsoon. It is a long-duration crop, so timely sowing is important to complete its spikes before the season ends.

What is the seed rate and spacing for hybrid castor?

Use about 4–6 kg/ha of hybrid castor seed. A common spacing is 90 × 60 cm for irrigated crops and wider (120 × 60 cm) on lighter, rainfed land, giving roughly 18,000–20,000 plants per hectare.

Is castor a good crop for dry regions?

Yes. Castor is deep-rooted and drought-hardy, which makes it one of the most dependable oilseeds for light soils and low-rainfall tracts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. It still responds strongly to a few protective irrigations.
